Barley Hall has put a new emphasis on creating killer pub grub. Its menu is a Tex-Mex inspired roundup of bar staples like tacos and burgers, but it's infused with a thoughtfulness sometimes lost on its hangout-bar kin. Take the Beast, for example. It's a honking three-pound burrito, loaded with Monterey Jack cheese, rice, black beans, and
salsa. And
pico de gallo. And your choice of meat Oh, and then completely smothered in nacho cheese and
chipotle vinaigrette. This is the kind of thing that can cure a hangover in seconds if, of course, it doesn't kill you first. But cut us some slack. We were saving room! The real standout in our hungry eyes was the blackened catfish tacos: four soft flour tortillas, each filled with spice-rubbed catfish and topped with
queso fresco,
salsa verde, in-house
pico de gallo, and a colorful and crunchy jicama slaw that elevates the dish from your average barroom grub to something you're more likely to find . . . well, anywhere other than Allston. If only all procedures fared this well post-op. Anya Kanevsky, Stuff at Night
